Southbroom Timber Homes
Southbroom Timber Homes was born here in Southbroom, and became known for top quality craftsmanship. We aim to be ever involved with the building, and supervised workers are efficient and thorough.
Inspired by the tranquil and natural atmosphere of a log home, we developed our own unique style and pride ourselves in our work. Log homes have become very popular, not only as vacation homes, but permanent residences for those looking for the ultimate in luxury, comfort, spaciousness and light.
Southbroom and surrounds have a variety of our log homes, from the most modern to the average family house, from high bare roof trusses to open plans, some have wooden floors and some ceramic or porcelain tiles. We have done extensive paving, and many ground containing methods, such as lock blocks or natural stone walls. Whatever the need, whether contemporary or old fashioned, our finishing are of the highest quality throughout our houses. A recent project of 5 units in Port Edward is an attractive project
We undertake complete contracts from your own ideas to the drawing up of plans, removal of wood restrictions and the approval process by the Council.
T & B Log Homes
HISTORY - T & B LOG HOMES
John Tanner, a civil engineer who had operated with great success in the construction of some of South Africa’s most challenging railways, retired to the pleasant South Cape village of Knysna with its famous lagoon, fynbos covered hillsides and extensive pine commercial forests in 1984.
In 1985 he took over and grew the T & B Log Homes construction company. This was one of the first companies in the Southern Hemisphere to recognise that timber housing was on the increase worldwide (a substantial percentage of homes in the USA and Canadian are built with solid log) and that the demand would shift upmarket to quality, long-lasting products with the durability, thermal characteristics and aesthetic appeal equal, if not better, to that of the best brick and mortar homes.
Tanner completely transformed the T & B system by inventing and patenting (in 51 countries) a new method of compacting the HEAVY SOLID LOGS through strong downward pressure. This was a world first and, in the opinion of T & B’s management, has never yet been bettered or even equalled elsewhere.

Eco Log Homes
Did you know?
1. They generally are made to a higher standard with superior craftsmanship and custom touches. Because of this, log homes regularly appraise higher than comparably sized conventional homes. Basically this means that, square foot for square foot, they have a higher resale value.
2. Log homes are sturdy, stand up well to the elements, and generally speaking last a long time. There are many stories of these houses surviving the worst Mother Nature has thrown at them, including the big 2005 hurricanes, Katrina and Rita. This shouldn't be surprising. Unlike walls in traditional homes, which are just frames covered with insulation and drywall, log homes are solid wood. There are still-standing, still-occupied log homes in Europe dating back more than 800 years.
3. The notion that log homes are warm and cozy isn't just fanciful thinking. Compared to a cold piece of drywall, wood is warm to the touch. Logs also have something called thermal mass going for them all that dense, solid wood is energy efficient, keeping temperatures inside the home comfortable year around.
4. If your log home is built and sealed properly, it will be very energy efficient. This means you spend less money on heating and cooling throughout the year. Many log home manufacturers create kits designed to be 15-20% more efficient than a conventional home.
5. Log homes are usually more quiet than stick-built homes. Remember that thermal mass we talked about? Well, aside from being energy efficient, it's sound efficient. Those dense logs have sound-deadening effects. That means you can block out everything from outside noises to your kid's basement drum solos. No need for ear plugs, thank you.
6. One last benefit, is that it's easy to maintain log homes and keep them free of mold, mildew, and insect infestations. In traditional homes, there are sealed wall cavities where everything from mold, termites, and rats can get in and thrive. Log homes don't have those dank hollows. To inspect for problems, all you have to do is take a walk around your home and check out the condition of the logs. This makes it easy to catch problems earlier and get them taken care of before they become costly situations.Friday, February 5, 2010
Wooden Log Cabins
While nothing can compare with the beauty of a natural wood home, there are many other practical reasons for selecting timber over traditional building methods.
